Margaret River Aquafarm is the largest aquaponics farm in Western Australia, located in the rural surrounds of Forest Grove near Margaret River. Founded in 2019 by John Bowskill, the farm combines aquaculture and hydroponics in a fully climate-controlled greenhouse. This closed-loop system allows fish and plants to thrive symbiotically—fish waste nourishes the plants, and the plants purify the water, which is then recirculated back to the fish tanks.
The farm is driven by a strong commitment to sustainability. Solar-powered and water-efficient, it minimizes environmental impact while producing high yields of clean, nutrient-rich food. More than 30 varieties of pesticide-free crops are grown here, including lettuce, pak choy, kale, silver beet, beets, and sweet peas, alongside freshwater fish.
Produce from the aquafarm is sold directly to the community through the Margaret River Farmers Market and is also supplied to a number of local restaurants known for prioritizing fresh, local ingredients.
Margaret River Aquafarm is not only a center for sustainable food production but also a place of learning and community engagement. It regularly hosts volunteers through programs like Workaway and WWOOF, offering hands-on experience in aquaponics, horticulture, and regenerative agriculture.
The property itself carries a rich history—it was once the site of Western Australia’s first organic winery and has long been associated with organic farming practices dating back to the post-World War I era.
For those interested in volunteering, learning, or sourcing produce, the farm welcomes contact via phone or email.
