Every Wave Begins as a Ripple: Why We Started Looksi South West

Every Wave Begins as a Ripple: Why We Started Looksi South West

We get asked all the time: Why on earth did you build another business directory? Haven’t those been around forever? Isn’t Google enough?

Fair questions. And I’m going to be brutally honest with you.

We started Looksi South West because we’re a couple of stubborn romantics in our 40s who still believe in humans, community, and the idea that not everything needs to be swallowed whole by an algorithm.

Yes, business directories are old-school. Some look like they haven’t been updated since dial-up. But that’s exactly why we couldn’t stop thinking about creating something different that speaks to our current day.

From Ripple to Wave

Every wave begins as a ripple. That’s the truth we keep coming back to.

Big things rarely arrive fully formed. They start small — a quiet idea, a single decision, a moment of frustration or hope. Then, if you keep showing up, the ripple grows.

My husband and I have ridden some serious life waves together — no need for details, most have a story abundant in chapters like a pick-a-path novel.

Over twenty years ago, when I first fell head-over-heels for him, I was selling my art at local markets — full of optimism and heart eyes. I painted him a wave with the words “Every wave begins as a ripple.”

That painting wasn’t just a romantic gesture. It became our quiet mantra through all the chaos that followed. A reminder that everything big starts small. Every love story. Every business. Every wild idea that turns into something real. When life feels too much (or too little), those words pull you back to centre.

And yes… he still has the painting. it’s his treasure not to be sharing here. The sentiment means more than the quality of my brushstrokes 🫶

The Generations That Got Us Here

We’ve lived through a wild stretch of history. We watched computers appear, the internet arrive, phone lines vanish, and “tech neck” become a legitimate complaint. We taught our grandparents how to use ATMs and gently guided our parents through the Boomer Book, Gram, and Tik Tik era.

But if we zoom out further, the story gets even richer:

I’m generalising here, as I’m aware not all experiences are the same, and I don’t want to take away from or embellish anyone’s history. Our parents’ parents knew real scarcity and hardship — pioneers of the great unknown, rationing, post-war rebuilding, making do with very little. Our parents felt the weight of responsibility — they built stable futures, laid solid groundwork, and gave us a softer landing as they discovered new freedoms. We grew up in relative abundance, forming our ethics around technology, clinging to remnants of slower times while standing on the cusp of the future as we know it. And now our friends’ kids? They’re swimming in overwhelm — endless choice, constant availability, screens, AI, and infinite options before they’ve even finished breakfast.

The fight is on to maintain real human connection in all of this.

It mind-boggles the hell out of us what’s to come and how our brains will continue to evolve.

Yet here’s what we keep coming back to: the future shouldn’t terrify us. It should spark curiosity. The overwhelm only wins if we let it. We need constraints, intention, and places where we can still see each other clearly — drawing on our past with the benefit of hindsight.

This is exactly why we are building Looksi. I say “building” because this is a platform that will grow and change with the times, with our community’s needs, while advancing with technology at a speed we can all cope with.

The Tide is Rising for Looksi

Looksi began formation as we grew tired of the dated, clunky business directories that were supposed to represent our community. They felt like dusty digital filing cabinets from another era while everything else accelerated around us.

So we decided to modernise the whole concept — make it beautiful, useful, hyper local, and keep things human.

Looksi South West is our thread back to each other in an increasingly digital world. A place to keep community alive. A platform that celebrates the unique businesses, professionals, trades, creatives, and makers of the South West instead of letting everything blur into sameness.

Celebrating our unique and nodding to the past. Keeping purpose alive in a world of easy replication — while still moving forward. Because no one wants to be left behind.

We also want to help the next generation get visible without losing their soul or hiding away completely. Finding balance in this huge space.

A Gentle Reflection on Business

If you’ve ever felt the pull to create something meaningful — or you’re already in the middle of your own ripple — this is for you. Take a moment.

Pause. Look back. Remember what your ripple looked like.

Maybe you started with nothing but a wild idea and sheer determination. Maybe you’ve survived economic rollercoasters, tech shifts, and moments where you nearly threw in the towel. Maybe you’re still figuring it out.

That’s the beautiful part.

Every established business you see today started as someone’s ripple. Just like ours. Just like yours.

We created Looksi as a love letter to that spirit. To the good humans who stick together. To progress that doesn’t come at the cost of connection. To the South West’s vibrant, quirky, one-of-a-kind business landscape.

So here we are. A little older, significantly more stubborn, and still ridiculously optimistic.

If you’re a local business doing your thing in the South West — whether you’re just setting up, a hidden gem, creative force, or a beloved local staple — we’d love to have you on Looksi.

We invite you to drop in on us and share this wave.
Because – Every wave begins as a ripple. And we’re only just getting started.

With love (and double a high five 🙌), we’ve got this! Together.
